Bio

The quote on the 2006 Grapevine[1] calendar read:  “The soul would have no rainbow had the eye no tears.”  All over the world the people in Twelve Step Programs come together to recover from a specific addiction or compulsion, such as alcohol, drugs, overeating, gambling, debting, etc. At last count there were over two hundred Twelve Step anonymous programs[2], with each anonymous program made up of a collective of like people who are struggling to recover from a common problem.  A common problem so severe that it made their life unmanageable and not worth living – a common problem that meant to kill them. The members of each Twelve Step Program thereby share a common welfare with each other.  In all Twelve Step Programs, recovery depends upon …and leads to… social unity because each Twelve Step meetings is its own community with members who by observing each other, learn how to give and receive support with courtesy and respect. Both old timers living in the rainbow and the newcomers living in a sea of tears need each other – one to see how bad it was and the other to see how good it can be.

Our common problem is that we avoided not just our art.  Blocking is an unnatural reaction to all of life. We avoided, blocked, and pushed away specific relationships with phobic fears and ambivalent commitments.  Our relationships were unmanageable. Not being able to fulfill our creativity broke our heart.  How striking that the word art is half of the word heart.

The Avoidant Phobic Syndrome is a personality disorder, severe enough to have a medical name and serious enough to not only stunt one’s life force but to shut it down.  The Creative Block is the common name used to describe a blocked artist.  The Creative Block refers only to the tip of the iceberg, which can obviously be seen.  Underneath this tip, the iceberg is ten times as large and a deadly force to encounter.  The Avoidant Phobic Syndrome refers to a traumatized life in desperate need of a spiritual miracle.
